Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do I register for the recreation league?
Online registration is available through the Register link to the left.
2. Who can play on the MBC recreation league teams?
Any child in the MCPASD in grades 2-8. Second grade is an instructional league, third grade plays 3v3 games, 4th, 5th and 6th grades play 5v5 games. 5th and 6th grades are combined on teams. 4th grade is separate. 7th and 8th grades are new this year and format will depend on number of interested players. We hope to put together leagues of 6 teams from around Dane County.
3. Can I make requests on the registration to have a friend on the team?
Yes, but there are no guarantees. We try to have at least 2 or 3 students from the same school on one team. We try not to have teams that have all members from the same school. E-mail Meriel at rongstad@chorus.net with special requests.
4. Why do the 3rd graders play 3v3 games?
3v3 is better for skill development. A player can't "hide" in a 3v3 format. They get more touches on the ball.
5. How are teams formed?
In mid November, interested parent coaches meet and form even teams through a draft process. Requests from the registration form are considered during this process.
6. When am I notified what team my child is on?
By the end of November your child's coach should contact you with team information.
7. What information will be on the website?
Coach contact information and game schedules.
8. When do practices begin?
First to second week in December for 3rd-6th grades, first Saturday after winter break for 2nd grades. 7th and 8th grade practices begin mid November
9. What day do we practice?
This is variable due to gym scheduling and gym availability. Coaches may request a first, second and third choice. Younger grades typically practice earlier.
10.How many days a week do we practice?
2nd grade has one instructional session on Saturday mornings, 3rd-8th grades have one practice per week.
11. How long are practices?
2nd grade is 1 hr 15 min, 3rd grade is 1 hour, 4th-8th grades 1 1/2 hrs.
12. When are games?
Saturdays beginning after winter break and going for 10 Saturdays. Times are variable but typically younger grades are morning and older are late morning, early afternoon. Games are early December to mid February for 7th/8th graders on Saturdays.
13.Are scores and records kept?
Second grade is instructional only. 3rd grade plays games with referees and a clock but no score is kept. 4th-6th grades keep score but no league records are tracked. The only time a win/loss record is kept is during the 5th/6th grade tournament at the end of the season.
14.Do MBC teams play other area teams?
Yes, Cross Plains offers a basketball club for 3rd-6th grades. Our teams have a combined schedule with Cross Plains and occasionally we travel to Cross Plains (usually Park Elementary School ) for games. 4th grade travels to Waunakee and CP for games. 7th and 8th graders can expect to travel to communities around Dane County including Stoughton, Verona, Fitchburg, Cottage Grove...
15. Who referees the games?
Our recreational games are refereed by high schoolers. They are trained by our referee coordinator but are not WIAA certified. Using high school students gives them an opportunity to learn and at the same time helps us keep down our costs.
16.What is Tri County/Tournament Only basketball?
Tri County basketball is available to girls and boys in 4th-8th grades. Girls' Tri County occurs in the fall and boys after Winter break. Tri County teams play against other community teams. There is some travel involved on the weekends within an hour of Middleton. There are evaluations in early September in order to place players on teams according to ability. Tournament only teams are sometimes formed from the first team when they decide not to play Tri County.
17.Can my daughter play in the Recreational League after the Tri County season?
Yes, the girls' Tri County season ends in mid December. Players that are on Tri County teams that are not continuing their season by playing tournaments may sign up for the 4th and 5th/6th grade recreational league. The player must pay the normal recreation league fee to participate. Players coming from Tri County teams will be split up in order to keep the league as balanced as possible.
18.How do I let MBC know that I'm interested in coaching?
There is a spot on the registration form to indicate your willingness to coach.
19. If I decide to coach, what resources are available to help me?
MBC offers training materials and instructional clinics.
