American Sport Education Program Course (ASEP)

To ALL Interested Coaches:

This is a reminder for all potential coaches of boys or girls Tri-County, Competitive or Recreation level teams: To qualify as a coaching candidate, you must successfully complete the American Sport Education Program (ASEP) course Coaching Youth Basketball.

IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO, YOU MUST COMPLETE THIS COURSE PRIOR TO THE START OF THE CURRENT YEAR'S SEASON. Equipment will only be issued to coaches who have been certified! Please note that completion of the course is a one-time requirement - it does not need to be done each year. Coaches will be registered in ASEP's National Coaches Registry upon successful completion of the course.

American Sport Education Program (ASEP) is a world-wide organization that has been a leader in coaching education for almost 30 years. This useful course is aimed at volunteer coaches of athletes 14 and under in a recreational, noncompetitive setting and is taken online. There are a series of PDF downloads within the course that can be saved as a hard-copy reference. Topics include communication with players, parents, and officials; safety and fitness; rules; practice planning; tactics; and skill instruction.

The Coaching Youth Basketball course facilitates the learning of fundamental coaching concepts and responsibilities. Coaches are expected to come away with the most important coaching points of the major skills and tactics of youth basketball. Coaches of more advanced and competitive teams are encouraged to take advantage of the MBC Library of Coaching Videos and Books.

To obtain instructions and a key code for taking the online course, please contact Rob Thorson at 828-0800 or via email at rsthorson@charter.net. The course fee is pre-paid by MBC.

Who Is Required To Take This Course?

All head coaches of Middleton Basketball Club teams. The Coaching Youth Basketball course is also strongly encouraged for assistant coaches.

When

This is an online course that can be completed at your convenience - however you must complete the course and pass the online test prior to the start of the season. The course only needs to be completed once – not each year.

How

Contact Rob Thorson by phone at 828-0800 or email him at rsthorson@charter.net to receive a key code and instructions. Course materials provide an internet access code so you can begin immediately.

How Long

ASEP estimated time for course completion is 3-5 hours.

Prior and Alternate Certification

MBC previously required completion of ASEP's "Coaching Principles" course. Coaching Youth Basketball replaces that course. If you have already taken Coaching Principles, you have met MBC's requirement. Also, coaches certified by the WIAA to coach school sports are exempt from this MBC course requirement.

If you have questions, please contact MBC's Coach & Player Development Commissioner Rob Thorson at 828-0800.
